Great Malvern’s Past as a Historic Spa Town

Great Malvern has a fascinating history that can be traced back to its origins as a modest medieval village; however, its transformation into a renowned spa town began in the 19th century when many discovered the therapeutic properties of Malvern’s local spring waters.

Back then, Great Malvern’s reputation for healing springs led to a surge in popularity as visitors flocked to the area seeking health and relaxation. To accommodate the growing number of guests, the town underwent major architectural development. This included the construction of many magnificent Victorian and Edwardian buildings that still grace the streets today.

Great Malvern Train Station

Great Malvern railway station

Now we know what you’re thinking. Why on earth would we include a train station in a blog covering the greatest things about Great Malvern?

Well, aside from the fact that it offers fast and easy access to many major towns and cities, Great Malvern Station holds major historical significance.

Great Malvern railway station dates back to 1860 during the flourishing Victorian railway era.

Constructed under the guidance of notable architect Edmund Wallace Elmslie, the station’s architecture seamlessly melds functionality with ornate Victorian design, characterised by its intricate ironwork, large windows, and red brick façade.

At the easterly end of Platform 2, you’ll encounter the entrance to the Worm – a Grade II listed pathway hidden beneath Avenue Road, connecting to the former Imperial Hotel.

Initially constructed to facilitate first-class guests and assist porters in handling luggage, the passage served as a direct link to the hotel.

Despite remaining disused for half a century, rumour has it that there are plans to restore the tunnel to its former glory in the coming years. And, while there is yet to be any sign of reopening, it’s still a must-see feature of the station that is easily missed if you don’t know that it’s there!
